Margaret decided to produce this website to show her unpublished work on the metformin and the Ras/Akt/mTOR pathways - major pathways involved in most cancers. The work is very comprehensive and includes lots of information that may be of value to anyone interested in these pathways. It also gives information about Manchester Amputee Fitness Initiative (MANFIT).

Margaret was an honorary researcher at the Institute of Cancer Sciences, the University of Manchester and is now researching epigenetics particularly in cancer and mental illness such as schizophrenia. She also voluntarily runs MANFIT

She set up MANFIT because she is passionate about people with prostheses having access to different types of exercise in safe, private environments.

 

Margaret has a BSc (hons) in biology, a masters in population health (electronic) and a PhD entitled "Radionuclide uptake and transport in bracken", a project which was set up to discover the effects of the Chernobyl accident on the environment. All were studied at the University of Manchester.

She has been always interested the beneficial effects of exercise and diet and so started to record DVDs for GPs and hospitals displaying these effects for patients to see.

She decided to do the MPHe to extend her knowledge and for a qualification in public health. The dissertation was on the subject of obesity and cancer, which made her interested in cancer, its causes and effects.

All these projects are important to Margaret. Her research has become more important to her since her daughter Karen died of breast cancer in 2013. Derbyshire is now running a project to encourage GPs to inform and promote screening of breast, cervical and bowel in people with LD which Margaret very much supports.
